– Three local athletes have been named the Jamestown Optimist Athletes of the Week for the week ending Dec. 31.
Ashley Kronebusch, a senior on the Blue Jay gymnastics team, and Carissa Finck, a junior goalie on the Blue Jay hockey team, were both named the High School Girls Athlete of the Week.
Kronebusch has placed in the Top 5 in eight of 10 events in the past two meets. Her all-around score of 33.7 in both meets is a career best, and was good for second place at the Tri-State Meet last week.
Finck made 57 saves while allowing only four goals during a 3-3 tie to East Grand Forks and a 2-1 win against Crookston last week in Crookston. It was Jamestown’ first win ever over a Minnesota team, and ended Crookston’s five-game winning streak.
Jamestown College senior basketball player Byron Jones was named the Male College Athlete of the Week.
Jones led the Jimmies to a 60-56 win over No. 18 Warner Southern of Florida on Dec. 19. He scored 17 points to lead the team, including a perfect 12-for-12 from the free throw line. He also grabbed four rebounds and dished out three assists. Jones nailed down the win with a rebound and two free throws with just second remaining.
There was no High School Boys or Female College Athletes of the Week.
