– Playing softball in February usually either means indoors or out of state to places like Florida and Texas. But not in Jamestown.

The Jamestown Parks and Recreation Department is trying to put together an 8-team co-ed softball tournament to be played outdoors Feb. 4 at McElroy Softball Complex.

The tournament is part of Jamestown’s Cabin Fever Days, which runs Feb. 3-12 and is a collection of community events to get people out and active in the dead of winter.

John Ruff with Jamestown Parks and Recreation said they’ve tried to play the softball tournament for a couple years, but there hasn’t been enough interest because of heavy snowfall and cold temperatures. This year, that could change, he said.

“This year, it looks like it may be a little bit different story, so we decided to try it again,” he said Wednesday afternoon as the sun shone bright and temperatures in the mid-40’s continued to melt the few inches of snow Jamestown has received this winter. “I’m just hoping we get weather like we have today, that would be awesome.”

Ruff said other events slated for Cabin Fever Days so far include a Chilifest, sleigh rides, open swimming, open gyms, outdoor skating, Jimmie and Blue Jay games, and even a co-ed golf event using tennis balls.

“That should be interesting,” Ruff said of the golfing, which they’ve done before.

The Jamestown Parks and Rec. encourages local businesses and organizations to hold activities during Cabin Fever Days as a way “to get everybody out to do something and have fun during those days,” said Ruff.

The Parks and Recreation then promotes all the events with posters and event listings around town. Organizations can get their activity listed by calling the Jamestown Parks at 252-3982.

The softball tournament is set to be an 8-team co-ed tournament using a 16-inch softball. Two games will be guaranteed for each team. Registration fee is $60 per team and the deadline is Tuesday, Jan. 31. Contact John Ruff at 252-3982 for more information.
