N.D. (University of Jamestown) – In May 2015, an announcement came that a new sports arena was to be built at the University of Jamestown. Five months later, plans have been released.

The University of Jamestown has unveiled their plans for a proposed $14 million, 49,000 square-foot arena. A generous donation from the late Harold Newman kick-started the project, which is part of a $60 million campaign initiated by the University in 2013. The new arena would include a training facility, training tables for athletes, treadmills and stationary bikes.

The University has undergone numerous renovations and during the press conference in May, University President Robert Badal stated that it was time to focus on athletics.

The Hansen Center will be cleared of all athletic facilities once the arena is built and will be turned into a lower level dining area and hangout spot for students. Other ideas include a bowling area or indoor theater. An exterior addition of an ice rink for wintertime and sand volleyball area may be explored as well.

The Newman Arena will have 2,000 seats with room for overflow. A bell will be constructed and every time the Jimmies win, the bell will be rung. The project is estimated to be complete in roughly 15 to 18 months.
