CITY, ND – (NewsDakota.com) Sharon Buhr, chair of the Barnes ON THE MOVE Partnership announced that the North Dakota Department of Health Comprehensive Cancer Control Program has awarded grant funds in the amount of 00 to the Barnes ON THE MOVE Partnership.
The funds will be used to promote physical activity and healthy eating in order to prevent cancer in children and adults in Barnes County. Funds will also be used to reduce the risk of colorectal cancer by offering easy colorectal screening kits at flu clinics as well as help cancer survivors and their families learn about the benefits of physical activity to help prevent cancer.
Cancer is the second leading cause of death in North Dakota. Through the efforts of the Barnes ON THE MOVE Partnership projects such as ON THE MOVE to Prevention, Screening and Survivorship are vital to prevent cancer and improve the quality of life for North Dakota residents.
“Research shows that 60-80% of deaths from colorectal cancer could be prevented if everyone age 50 and older were screened regularly.” states Andrea Winter, Licensed Registered Dietitian at Young People’s Healthy Heart Program at CHI Mercy Health. “Screening has the potential to save lives…our goal is to increase our screening rates in Barnes County through this grant.”
