SD (NewsDakota.com) The Oakes High School football team had a great first quarter to start their 2015 season in Groton, South Dakota on Friday night.

Problem was the next three quarters just weren’t like the opening 12 minutes for the visitors.

After scoring the first 13 points in the game, the Tigers scored the next 34 to defeat Oakes 34-13. Oakes’ two scores came in the first quarter, a six yard run by Matt Kuipers, and a 70 yard reception by Brody Bartholomew from Grayson Roney. The Tornadoes amassed more than 160 yards in the first, where the hometown Tigers managed just one yard.

In quarter two, Oakes had -1 yard, and Groton found their legs courtesy of the Shabazz brothers. Quarterback Bennet Shabazz and running back Seric Shabazz each had two touchdowns throughout the remaining of the contest to start the year 1-0.

In week number two, 0-1 Oakes will head north to Larimore with a date against the Polar Bears next Friday night. Larimore started the season 1-0 with a 33-22 victory on Friday against Hillsboro/Central Valley.
