CITY, ND – (NewsDakota.com) Valley City Commissioner Madeline Luke is concerned about whether the state health department is following their sulfate level guidelines for the Sheyenne River set up before the Devils Lake east end outlet released water with higher sulfate levels into the river.

Luke also expressed concern that no studies are being conducted to monitor what the effects higher sulfates may have on biota living in the river. She said its time to conduct a study to see what the high sulfate levels may be having with living organisms.

Luke said earlier this year sulfate readings below Bald Hill Dam were at 790 parts per million before heavy rainfall diluted the level. The agreement calls for sulfate readings to be maintained below 750 parts per million below Bald Hill Dam year round.
