Virginia Schaller, 93, of Jamestown, ND, passed away Thursday, April 9, 2015. Phyllis was born September 28, 1921, in Medicine Lake, MT, the daughter of Edna (Jackson) and Melvin Markuson. Phyllis attended school in Dooley, Opheim, and Richey, MT, and after her father passed away in 1936, the family moved to Hannaford, ND to be nearer to her grandparents. Phyllis graduated from Hannaford High School in 1939 and enrolled in the Jamestown School of Business. After graduation, she worked in the Auditor’s Office of the Midland Continental Railroad. She married Joseph Schaller on November 4, 1943. Joe had enlisted in the Army and when he returned from the war in 1946, they made their home in Jamestown raising five children. Joe passed away April 15, 2007.
Phyllis was a busy Mom volunteering at St. John’s Academy doing office work and being a Room Mother and Boy Scout Den Mother through the years. She enjoyed camping by tent, trailer and motor home. She was an avid reader and also enjoyed crocheting, cross stitch, embroidering, crafts and ceramics. She was a member of The Basilica of St. James and St. James Tabernacle Society. When her children were older, she went to work part-time for Farmers Union Service Association for 17 years retiring in 1981.
Survivors include her sons, John, Jim (Illa), and Gary Schaller, Jamestown, ND, Bill (Carol) Schaller, Killdeer, ND, and son-in-law, Duane Helgeson, Homosassa, FL; brothers, Doug (Dorothy) Markuson, Billings, MT, Dale (Audrey) Markuson, Cotton Lake, MN and Jerry Markuson, Kenneth City, FL; grandchildren, Kris Schaller, Fargo, ND, Melissa Schaller, Jamestown, ND, Angie (Jake) Lewis, Peoria, AZ and Gretchen (Adam) Aarestad, Fargo, ND; great-grandchildren, Kamden, Emiree, and Aleise Lewis, Peoria, AZ, and Levi Aarestad, Fargo, ND.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter, Donna Helgeson, sister, Geraldine Markuson and grandson, Jeff Schaller.
Memorial Service: Monday, April 13, 2015, 11:00 a.m. at Williams-Lisko Funeral Chapel, Jamestown, ND.
Interment: Calvary Cemetery, Jamestown, ND, at a later date.
