(NewsDakota.com) The Oakes High School baseball team started the 2015 season with an impressive win in Class B Region I play with a 13-1 victory in four and a half innings on Tuesday afternoon at Cummings Field against the Loboes of LaMoure-Litchville/Marion.
Jon Tyre earned the win for the Tornadoes (1-0 Class B Region 1) going all five innings, surrendering four hits, with an unearned run charged while striking out 10 batters. Tyre struck out 35 batters all of last season. Offensively, Oakes had 11 hits off of LLM pitching, scoring six runs and batting through the lineup in both the first and second innings. Tyre had three hits, and two runs scored, while Matt Kuipers and Bryce Meehl each had triples.
LLM (0-1) had only four hits, with the lone extra base hit coming from Anthony Olson in the fifth inning. Parker Stemen took the loss on the mound, lasting just one inning, allowing five hits, five earned runs and picking up one strikeout.
Oakes is scheduled to hit the road for a date with the Squirrels of Central Cass on Thursday. Coverage on KDDR-AM 1220/95.9 FM and NewsDakota.com at 4:45 with first pitch of the seven inning regional contest at 5 p.m, provided the field in Casselton is playable. If the field isn’t ready for play by Thursday, the contest may be moved to Oakes, or rescheduled.
