Plantz, 68, Casselton, ND died on Wednesday, March 4, 2015 at Sanford Health, Fargo, ND.
Leon Clifford Plantz was born Feb. 20, 1947 in Middleton, MI to Billy and Edna (Coye) Plantz. He grew up in Walhalla, ND and graduated from high school there. He attended Wahpeton State School of Science before moving to Western Montana where he was a smoke jumper. Leon was then drafted into the US Army where he honorably served in Vietnam. He returned to North Dakota and attended NDSU. Leon married Kathy Feist on Aug. 22, 1970 in Fargo. They lived in West Fargo and Horace, ND before moving to Valley City, ND in 1979. While in Valley City, he owned and operated Plantz Jewelers for 19 years. They moved to Casselton in 2005. He then worked for SJA selling diamonds and precious gemstones to retailers across the country. He ultimately returned home to be the kindest, most gentle, most patient, biggest-hearted care giver to his wife who suffers from MS and also joined Royal Jewelers in Fargo.
He loved golfing and enjoyed his ‘55 Ford which has been in the family for four generations. He was very proud of all of his grandchildren and was looking forward to his retirement years to be a full time Papa. Leon was also proud to be an active member in the Rotary Club, Chamber of Commerce, VFW, Eagles, Elks, Shriners, 40&8, and the Jaycees to name a few.
He is survived by his wife, Kathy; two daughters, Billie Jo (Matt) Stahl, Killdeer, ND and Aarika (Jason) Thornton, Valley City, ND; daughter-in-law, Kari Plantz, Casselton; six grandchildren, Liza, Sadie and Makenzie Stahl, Alex and Ryanne Thornton and Brady Plantz; a sister, Jeannie (Bud) Schmitz, Dent, MN; a niece, Mindi Schmitz and two nephews, Paul and Rick Schmitz and their families.
He was preceded in death by his parents and son, Tylar.
Funeral: Monday, March 9, 2015 at 1 PM at Martin’s Lutheran Church, Casselton with visitation one hour prior. A reception will follow at the Vets Club in Casselton.
Burial: ND Veterans Cemetery, Mandan, ND.
