Amelia Schardin was born on October 10, 1924 to Fredrick and Emma (Belz) Schardin on the family farm near Jud, ND.  She grew up on the farm and attended country schools in LaMoure County.  Alyce was baptized on November 16, 1924 and confirmed on November 12, 1939 at Zion Lutheran Church in Edgeley, ND.

Alyce graduated from high school in Jud, ND and attended the Normal Industrial School in Ellendale, ND before teaching in the area country schools.  She was united in marriage to Harold Kurtz on June 6, 1947.  To this union, the young couple would be blessed with two children: Claudette and Gregory.

Alyce was a long time member of Zion Lutheran Church in Edgeley, ND, where she taught Sunday School and was an active member of the LWML.  She worked at the grocery store and the bank in Edgeley.

Alyce is survived by her daughter, Claudette (Jerome ) Williams of Lenexa, KS; her son Gregory of Sioux Falls, SD; two sisters, Violet Podenski of Edgeley, ND and Leila Schardin of Jamestown, ND; four grandchildren, Eric, Jesse, and Jason Kurtz and Jaclyn Hinel; four great-grandchildren, Gavin and Madeline Kurtz and Jonas and Haven Hinel; and many other relatives and friends.

Alyce was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Emma; husband of 64 years, Harold; and one sister, Bertha Belz.

Funeral Service: 1:00 pm, Monday, February 23, 2015, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Edgeley, ND with Rev. Alan Eppen officiating.

Visitation: The hour before the funeral service at the church.

Burial: Mt. Hope Cemetery, Edgeley, ND.
