CITY, N.D. (VCSU) – The Valley City State University volleyball team has added a 6-foot-1 middle hitter with the addition of Sisseton, S.D., native Emily Weatherstone

Viking head coach Adam Longmore announced this week that Weatherstone has signed a letter of intent to attend VCSU and play volleyball for the Vikings starting this fall.

Weatherstone is currently a senior at Sisseton High School in Sisseton, S.D. She was named Team MVP during her senior season after helping Sisseton to a 16-11 record and a 7th-place finish at the 2014 state tournament.

“Emily brings some much-needed size into our program,” said Longmore. “There are a lot of things about her that you cannot coach, and there’s no question in my mind how good she can be. She can be one of the best middles in the conference if she works hard enough.”

Along with earning Team MVP during her senior season, Weatherstone was named to the Aberdeen News All-Area Volleyball Team and was selected an all-conference player in the Northeast Conference. As a junior she helped Sisseton to a 6th-place finish at the state tournament.

Weatherstone is the daughter of Jim and Colette Weatherstone. She plans to study elementary education while at Valley City State University.

Weatherstone joins Taylor Balkan (Setter, 5-7, Sequim, Ore.), Clarissa Olson (Hitter, 5-9, Valley City), Autumn Johnson (Hitter, 6-2, Hazen, N.D.), and Tyler Bulawa (Hitter, 6-0, Bismarck, N.D.) as members of the 2015 recruiting class at VCSU.

“Our recruiting class is coming together nicely,” Longmore said. “We continue to recruit extraordinary student-athletes.”

Valley City State University finished last season 15-18 in Longmore’s first year as head coach, tying the program’s most wins in a season since 2006. The Vikings compete in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and play their conference games in the North Star Athletic Association.
