S.D. (NewsDakota.com) The Valley City State Vikings traveled south of the border Saturday for their final game of a week long road swing. In the women’s game the Vikings defeated the Trojans 70-65, while the men would fall just short against Dakota State in a 65-60 final.
Women: Valley City State 70 Dakota State 65
The Vikings overcame a 15 point deficit in the second half with strong defense and perimeter play. On the eve of her birthday, Georgia Williams erupted for a game high 26 points and went 7-for-9 from the three point line. The Vikings stubborn defense allowed the Trojans to hit just 33 percent from the field in the second half.
Steph Pederersen finished the game with 14 points and six rebounds.
The Trojans were led in scoring by Erin Rabenberg who tallied 12 points.
The Vikings advance to 19-7 on the year, they are 7-1 in the conference tied for first place with Jamestown.
Men: Valley City 60 Dakota State 65
With Miguel Sansavour returning to the line up for the Trojans, Dakota State defense was back to full capacity. The Vikings worked thorough the Trojans burly post player shooting 46 percent from the field.
The downfall to the Vikings game was their turnovers. They gave up the ball to the Trojans 19 times in the game allowing the home team to score 20 points. in the transition.
Ellwood Ellenson finished the game just one rebound shy of a double-double with 17 points and 9 rebounds in the loss.
Former Illinois State Standout, Bryant Allen led the Trojans with 17 points.
The loss drops the Vikings to 11-16 overall with a 1-7 record in the North Star.
Valley City returns home Wednesdy, Feb. 18 when they host Mayville State. The games can be heard on 1490 KOVC starting at 5:30pm with the women’s game. The men’s game will follow.
