ND (NewsDakota.com)  The top two teams in District 5 boys basketball met on Friday night at Carrington High School.  In the battle of the Cardinals, Carrington won in overtime 74-69.  Carrington remains undefeated in the district at 4-0 and 10-4 overall.  Ellendale drops their first game of the year and are now 5-1 in the district and 14-1 overall.  

The halftime score was tied at 29, Ellendale outscored Carrington 15-10 in the third quarter to take the lead by five going into the fourth quarter.  Carrington would put on a very effective full court press at the start of the fourth quarter causing Ellendale to turn the ball over numerous times and Carrington would take full advantage scoring 11 points in less the two minutes.

With just seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, Carrington would have to go the length of the court to tie the game.  After the ball was knocked out of bounce with about four seconds left, Carrington would inbounce the ball by their own basket.  Junior Connor Wendel passed the ball into Senior Brady Bickett who would turn and shoot and score off the glass at the buzzer to tie the game at 62.  Carrington would outscore Ellendale 12-7 in overtime to secure the victory.  Carrington was led by Bickett with 17 points including five 3-pointers.  Seniors Seth Abaurrea and Brady Smith each had 15 points, and Wendell ended with 14 points.  Senior Adam White of Ellendale led all scores with 34 points and five blocked shots.  

Next up for Carrington will be Saturday night (Feb. 7) at District 7 New Rockford/Sheyenne for a makeup game from December 15th.  Tipoff  around 5:30p on KDAK AM 1600 and newsdakota.com.
