N.D. (NewsDakota.com) The Valley City Hi-Liners boys and girls basketball teams continued Eastern Dakota Conference play on Thursday night at Fargo Shanley High School. The states topped ranked Deacon girl’s team worked past the Hi-Liners for a dominating 84-53 win. The boys kept the game a little closer at the beginning, but they too would fall 84-56 to Shanley.

The Deacons used precession passing to work the ball around the perimeter and create openings in the Hi-Liners defense. Shanley was led by Alivia Fraase’s 20 points in the post. Sarah Jacobson posted 18 points. Lauren Rotunda also posted double digits with 15 points in the game. 

The Hi-Liners were led in the game by Clair Olson’s 12 points.

The loss drops Valley City to 6-11 overall and 5-9 in the Eastern Dakota Conference. Top ranked Fargo Shanley remains undefeated at 14-0 on the year and 13-0 in the league.

Valley’s Nate Rodriguez opened the game strong from the three point line knocking down three buckets from behind the arch in the first 11 minutes of the game. It was after that mark that the Deacons would take advantage of Valley Ctiy turnovers creating a 16 point gap at the half.

In the final period, Shanley dominated the game with stellar play from Kelvin Caga who posted a game high 23 points. The other deacons would finish in double digits as Spencer Jacobson, Tre Fort and Matthew Walbaum all finished the game with 17 points. 

While Rodriguez led the Hi-Liners on the stat sheet with 17 points, Jared Lentz battled under the basket for 16 points. On the defensive side of the ball, the Hi-Liners senior helped hold Shanley’s big man, Lucas Rotunda, to just two points.

The loss drops Valley City to 4-11 both in the EDC and overall. The Deacons, who are receiving votes in the top five in the state, advance to 10-4 on the year and 9-4 in league play.

The Hi-Liners return to the HAC next Tuesday when they host Grand Forks Red River in a double header. You can hear both games on 1490 KOVC starting at 5:45pm with the boys.
