CITY (VCSU) – Valley City State University head baseball coach Casey Olney announced this week that Oakes native Jon Tyre has signed a letter of intent to play baseball with the Vikings in 2015-16.
A 6-foot tall pitcher and infielder from Oakes, N.D., Tyre pitched 68 innings during the high school and summer baseball seasons. He finished with a 2.15 ERA, 73 strikeouts and an 8-3 record on the mound.
“We are excited to welcome Jon to the Viking family,” said Olney. “We have been following him for awhile now and think that he will be a great addition to the program. Pitching is most likely the future for Jon, and he will have the chance to compete for innings early on in his career. We are looking forward to seeing him continue to develop and fill out during his senior year. Jon is a great student and bright young man that we think brings a lot to the program on and off the field. ”
Jon is the son of Harry and Brenda Tyre. He plans to major in athletic training while at VCSU.
The Viking baseball team finished last season third in the North Star Athletic Association and posted an 8-3 record this fall under head coach Casey Olney.
