CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) Linda Whitney, nationally and internationally known artist has a display of her mezzotints art work inside the CHI Mercy Health Art Gallery located in the hospital hallway between the clinic at 570 Chautauqua Blvd. Whitney says the mezzotint work will be on display for public viewing now through the end of December.
Whitney says that the thematic content of these recent mezzotints is derived from two different directions. The first comes from a collision of childhood memories of fairy tales and early TV shows with the political ramifications of those experiences.
There is a series of ‘Powwow’ mezzotints that are born from research, developed with a lot of wishful thinking, and then filtered through a contemporary point of view. Whitney states, “I am intrigued by societies rich in imbedded belief systems and texture of ritual.” She weaves all of this into the stories found in her art.
The mezzotint printmaking process is long and labor intensive. It was invented in the 1600s, and has recently experienced a resurgence and print makers throughout the world are creating mezzotints. At the gallery talk, Whitney will describe both the process and the stories in her mezzotints.
Whitney is professor emeritus at VCSU. Her mezzotints have traveled throughout North America, Europe and to Australia, New Zealand, Serbia, Nicaragua, and Russia.
Her work has been exhibited in over 250 regional, national, and international exhibitions and recently has been on exhibit at the International Mezzotint Festival Yekaterinburg, Russia; Printed Image 5, Sabatini Gallery, Topeka, KS; Clemson National Print and Drawing Exhibition, Clemson University, SC; Pacific League Pressing Matters, Palo Alto, CA; Ink Press Repeat National Printmaking Exhibition, William Patterson University, Wayne, New Jersey; Americas 2013 and 2014 National Works on Paper, Minot State University; Parkside Small Print Exhibition, Parkside, WI; IPE Greendoor Studios, Derby, UK; National Small Works Exhibition, Washington Printmakers Gallery, Silver Spring, MD; Saddleback Art Gallery Exhibition, Mission Viejo, CA; 34th Annual Juried Exhibition, Custer County Art and Heritage Center, Miles City, MT; Free Town Studios, Lafayette, LA; Managua, Nicaragua; and Novi Sad, Serbia.
