“Hank” Holden, age 95 of Valley City, ND and formerly of Tower City, ND died Aug. 20, 2014 at Sanford Health in Fargo, ND.  A Memorial Service with Military Honors will be conducted at 3 PM Monday, August 25, 2014 at the Lerud-Schuldt Funeral Home in Valley City. Inurnment will be in the Buffalo Cemetery.

Henry Holden was born Aug. 28, 1918 at Eckelson, ND the son of Ole and Hilda (Haugen) Holden.  He attended school through the 8th grade and then began working.  He entered military service in April of 1941 as part of the 34th Infantry Division and saw action in Algeria-French Morocco, Tunisia, Naples-Foggia, and Rome-Arno. Following his discharge he returned home and on Nov. 1, 1945 was married to Blanche Barkley.  The couple made their home at Tower City, ND and Henry was employed as a mechanic for many years.  Following his retirement the couple continued to make their home at Tower City.  Blanche died in 2008 and Henry later moved to Valley City.

Henry, like so many other WW II veterans, never received his medals for his service to his country.  Upon being notified of the oversight the government awarded Henry his medals. Those medals included a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart and were presented to Henry at a ceremony in Tower City by Congressman Earl Pomeroy.

Survivors include two daughters, Judy Douglas of Valley City, ND and Starlene (Darrel) Pfaff of West Fargo, ND and a sister Kate, Sacramento, CA; many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Blanche, a son, Dennis, a brother, Pete (Alice) Holden; 3 sisters Evelyn (Allan), Margaret (Orvin), and Louise.
