N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The Jamestown City Council has voted and approved to place the city’s firework ordinance change on the November 4th ballot.
Community residents came before the board and stated their concerns and gave their opinions on whether or not the ordinance should be changed. Gail Martin, a Jamestown resident, stated that it was even embarrassing to have discussions of voting on changing the ordinance.
Danielle Schmidt, another resident of Jamestown, stated that she believed the change to the ordinance was a good compromise and if the council didn’t agree, to let it go to the people for a vote.
Corey Bayer, owner of Fantastic Fireworks in Jamestown, stated that changing the ordinance was just baby steps and that allowing this to be voted on or approved would open the door to banning fireworks entirely.
The City Council, with the absence of Councilmember Dan Buchanan, voted to send the ordinance to the November 4th ballot using the ballot language that City Attorney Ken Dalstead provided. The vote will be to either leave the ordinance as it is or to change the ordinance to allow fireworks sale and detonation from July 1st through July 5th, from Noon to 11:00 PM, with the exception of July 4th, from Noon to 1:00 A.M.
