CITY, N.D. Close, really close, but no World titles this year but a lot of fun competing for one. Wilbur Gabel and two of his grandson’s, Cameron (15) and his brother Noah Gabel (11), all from Valley City, traveled to Hamburg, NY last week to participate in this year’s 2014 National Horseshoe Pitching Association (NHPA) World Tournament.
Both Wilbur and Noah won World titles in the past.
This year, Wilbur Gabel placed second, missing a playoff for the Championship by one game over three days of stiff competition. Cameron who has had a lot of success at the state level placed 3rd , also missing out on playoff for first by one game. Noah pitched well but failed to get into the Championship round by one place and finished 7th. All three had a great time and are already making plans to compete in next year’s World Tournament in Topeka Kansas.
This years Tournament drew hundreds of competitors from California to Florida and most states in between. There also are competitors from Canada. The NHPA has charters in all 50 states and more than 10,000 members.
