CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) the Valley City 16 under team begins pool play for the Northern National Championship today in Bismarck, North Dakota.
The 16U Valley City team will open up play at 1:00pm against the Dakota Fury from Sioux Falls, South Dakota. They will play that game at the Clem Kelly Softball Complex on field number six. Win or Lose, Valley City will play a second game starting at 5:00pm.
The 16 team tournament will feature seven teams from the state of North Dakota, four from Wisconsin, three from South Dakota, and one each from Minnesota and Illinois. The teams will open the tournament by playing in their assigned pool. After the conclusion of those games on Friday evening, the teams will be ranked and placed into a double elimination bracket for Saturday and Sunday.
When teams arrived in the States Capitol yesterday they performed in a scouting showcase for area high school coaches and college coaches. That was followed by the Opening Ceremonies and the Parade of Athletes at the Capitol Building.
In order for the girls to compete in the 16U format players had to be 16 as of January first of this year. While most teams may have teams with a number of 17-year-olds on the squad, Valley City’s average age is 15. That puts them a full year behind the 16U age limit. Just two members of the VC have celebrated their 17th birthday they are Brooke Breckheimer and Madison McDaniel.
