(NewsDakota.com) The LaMoure Post 19 American Legion baseball team held off a late rally by Oakes Post 36 Monday night at Townsend Field to win their home and season opener 5-4.
Post 19 (1-0 Southeast Region) never trailed in the contest. LaMoure scored their first run in the bottom of the second inning with a sacrifice fly to center from Parker Stemen that scored Anthony Olson, and added another two in the fifth to take a 3-0 lead.
Post 36 (0-1 Southeast Region) scored a run the sixth, and added another three in the seventh, but Cole Kelly grounded out to Brady Thielges on the mound, stranding Mike Kelly at third to end the game.
Thielges earned the win going all seven innings, allowing four hits and striking out six. Jon Tyre was the losing pitcher for Oakes with five and two-thirds innings with all five runs earned on six hits with seven strikeouts.
Both teams are in action on Tuesday against southeast regional competition. LaMoure is in Hankinson to face Hankinson-Fairmount, while Oakes welcomes Kidder County/Steele. The Oakes/Kidder County matchup can be heard on KDDR-AM 1220/95.9 FM and NewsDakota.com starting around 6 p.m.
