CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) For a number of reasons residential diversity in Valley City has increased. As the number of new residents increased, so has the number of people with different ethnic backgrounds, some of whom grew up speaking other languages.

Since knowing how to speak English is a major factor in success at work, several area residents have inaugurated a program called English Corner to help these people improve their spoken English.

Organizer Richard Betting say participants are encouraged to talk with native English speakers extensively, in small groups or in one-on-one situations. Such informal sessions allow learners to focus on typical language situations without criticism.

For example, activities include practicing ordinary meeting and greeting situations, bringing people together socially or to shop. English learners who interact with native speakers in small groups can improve their vocabulary, pronunciation and fluency.

The first English Corner session will be held at the Valley City-Barnes County Public Library, at 410 North Central Avenue, tonight from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.

English Corner will continue meetings at the Library every Monday evening at the same time. Free and open to the public.
