CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) A family business is closing after operating for 30 years in Valley City. The last rental date for “Movieland Video” will be June 14. The store will provide new releases every week until they close. There will be a liquidation sale on all remaining items after the store closes.
The store opened in 1984 between the Nu Bar and the VFW. Ron Thomsen purchased the store from Dave Kennedy in 1990 and moved the business to its current location. In 2002, Ron sold the business to his sister Tammy and her husband Barry Devitt.
Meanwhile #1 Sun Tanning will remain open at a new location. Daughter Kaitlin will continue to sell purses, jewelry and other accessories and also offer disk repair. The access door will be located between Hansen’s Jewelry and Makin’ Waves Beauty Salon on 2nd street northwest in Valley City.
Tammy Devitt says “With the combination of changing technology, such as movie kiosks, streaming, downloading and the lack of community support, it was impossible to keep the business going.
Devitt adds, “We have some terrific customers who we’ve developed relationships with over the past 12 years. When we had our house fire and our daughters lost pretty much everything, customers brought in clothes, toiletries and gift certificates. When our granddaughter was born, we had customers bringing in gifts for her as well. This is really hard because we are going to miss our customers and the great High School employees who have worked for us over the years.”
The Devitt family would like to thank the community for the support we’ve received over the last 12 years. It has truly been a fun experience for us and we will miss seeing you all.
