V.A. (NewsDakota.com) – CSX Railroad says the 105-car train that derailed and caught fire in Lynchburg, Virginia yesterday was carrying oil from the Bakken shale in North Dakota. The oil train was on its way to a nearby storage facility.

The derailment was a bad case of deja vu for Casselton mayor Ed McConnell, recalling December’s derailment, fire and explosion of a BNSF train carrying Bakken Crude.

There have been eight significant oil train accidents in the U.S. and Canada in the past year, many carrying crude from North Dakota. Days after the Casselton derailment, the federal government issued a safety alert, warning Bakken sweet crude may be more flammable that other types of oil.
