City Police Chief Dean Ross has been put on paid administrative leave for 5-days as the investigation into accusations he mismanaged and misspent thousands of dollars of public money.
Mayor Bob Werkhoven says the decision was made to give investigators time to conduct internal interviews without employees feeling intimidated.
Ross was notified this morning by city administrator Jon Cameron who told KOVC radio that the city made the announcement public only after someone leaked the information to a Fargo radio station concerning the Ross suspension.
Cameron says normally the city doesn’t release personal administrative leave actions like this to the public until an investigation is completed.
Ross told KOVC radio that is been an honor to serve as police chief for 11 years and with the department for the last 38 years. He says he and his family appreciate the support that so many citizens have given him and his family.
Ross told KOVC radio he has no plans to resign.
At a news conference this week, the city said a Bureau of Criminal Investigation into alleged mismanagement of 2 private accounts and 2 city federal tax I.D. number accounts continues.
After the news conference Ross says he’s done nothing wrong and the city charges are in retaliation for his refusal to obey a directive from the city administrator during a Barnes County board of commissioners meeting earlier this year over his questions of why the county would want to move the 9-1-1 dispatch center.
