CITY, N.D (NewsDakota.com) It was a beautiful weather for baseball and softball in Dakota Country on Tuesday night and the Hi-Liners baseball and softball teams took full advantage getting in Eastern Dakota Conference games.

The baseball team played into extra innings but couldn’t hold on as the Wahpeton Huskies defeated the Hi-Liners 9-2 in nine innings. The softball team would earn their third win in the conference on the road at Fargo Davies with a 9-5 victory.

Valley City 2 vs Wahpeton 9 – 9 innings

In what was set to be a seven inning game the Huskies and Hi-liners decided nine seemed more to their liking.

On the mound, Austin Berg allowed the Huskies just two runs through seven innings pitched.

Valley City trailed Wahpeton going into the final inning of play but would begin to rally when Ben Baasch found his way on the base paths.  A few batters later Garret Suhr would drive in his teammate to knot the game up at two.  

With the game still tied in the ninth, the Huskies were finally able to take the lead when Kameron McNary drove in two runs. Four more runs would follow that. McNary would then take the mound for Wahpeton clinching the win for the visitors.

The loss drops the Hi-Liners to 1-4 on the year with a conference record of 0-1.

Valley City 9 vs Fargo Davies 5  

Despite battling the flu, Valley City’s Jessica Denholm led the Hi-Liners both in the circle and at the plate.

The Hi-Liners senior hurler scattered eight Eagles hits and allowed just four earned runs. She helped herself out at the plate by sending a shot over the fence in right-center field in the sixth inning.

Hi-Liners got the scoring started early with a two RBI double from Danica Diegel in the first inning. In the third, Brooke Breckheimer would blast a homer of her own over the center field fence.  Davies would fight back to make it a one run game in the fourth, but the Hi-Liners would stifle the comeback attempt with a four run sixth inning.

The victory gives Valley City a perfect 3-0 record in the conference and an 8-1 regular season mark. The Hi-Liners next game is Thursday at Fargo South.
