Coon, 68, of Oakes, ND died on Sunday, March 30, 2014 at the Good Samaritan Society, Oakes.
Gerald Wayne, son of Charles and Lucille (Bolstad) Coon was born on October 28, 1945 at Nortonville, ND, where he grew up and attended Nortonville Public School. Gerald worked for local farmers, before becoming employed for Frolich Feed in LaMoure and later for LaMoure County. From July 12, 1967 to July 11, 1969, he served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, and was a Purple Heart Recepient. After his discharge, Gerald returned to the area and drove truck for Economy Oil in Oakes, starting his long career as a truck driver. He later was employed with the Melroe Company in Gwinner as a semi-driver until retiring on April 1, 2009. Gerald was honored to have been given numerous awards over the years for his many years of driving accident free.
He was united in marriage to Patty Gibson on June 28, 1974 at Oakes, North Dakota. Patty has two children from a previous marriage, Norman Nelson and Nancy White. Gerald and Patty made their home near Oakes, where he enjoyed taking care of their big yard. He also enjoyed camping and fishing. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, where he served on the church board.
He is survived by his wife, Patty; Norman (Tonja) Nelson, Caseville, MI; and Nancy White, San Antonio, TX; four grandchildren, Paige (Brian) Heyd, LaMoure, ND, Amber (Leonard) Young, Caseville, MI, Arnold White and Ashley White both of San Antonio, TX; and seven great-grandchildren. Gerald is also survived by his siblings, George Coon and Chaine Coon both of Nortonville, ND, Ned (DeAnna) Coon, Jill Coon and Kenny Geiszler, and Daisey Coon, all of Fargo, ND, Charlotte Schweigert and Florence (Duane) Pribbenow, all of Enderlin, ND, Mary (Lynn) Greshik, Spiritwood, ND, Sandra (Doyle) Burkhardt, Oakes, ND, and Janet (Neil) Braasch, Dilworth, MN; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Betty Coon, and a brother-in-law, Darrel Schweigert.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, April 3, 2014 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Dahlstrom Funeral Home, Oakes. His funeral will be on Friday, April 4, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at the First Presbyterain Church, Oakes, ND. Burial will be at the Oakes View Cemetery, Veteran Section.
