S.D. (NewsDakota.com)- A pair of overtime games played Saturday at the Dakota State Fieldhouse were split between the Trojans and the Jimmies. The Lady T’s gave No. 3 Jamestown all it could handle but was eventually bounced in OT, 90-82. The Jimmie men gave up a 12-1 run to start overtime and Dakota State eventually scored 23 points in the extra session to win 96-88.
The Dakota State women were trying to avoid the play-in game of the NSAA playoffs, but they needed to beat the No. 3 team in the country to do so and the Lady T’s just about did it. They built a lead of eight in the first half, but Jamestown outscored DSU 42-34 in the second half to tie the game. Jordan Bridges scored with 18 seconds left to tie the game at 76, this was after a Hannah Steele pulled UJ with two.
Kylie Westover had a chance to win it, but missed her game winner. The Jimmies scored the first seven points of overtime and rode that an eight-point win. The win was the 100th in the career of head coach Greg Ulland and it improved their record to 25-2.
Kyra Dewald paced Jamestown with 15 points. The trio of Dewald, Steele and Morgan Mathison hit some big shots down the stretch to keep the Jimmies around when it looked like DSU might pull away.
Jamestown is the No. 2-seed in the NSAA playoffs and will host Valley City State on Sunday at 3pm.
In the second overtime game of the evening, the Jimmie would fall just short. With twelve seconds remaining in the regulartion, Taylor Newton took off toward the basket and couldn’t get a clean look to put Jamestown in front. Coach Justin Wieck said after the game he wished he would have called a timeout to set up a play, “I wanted to let them just make a play, but I probably should have called a timeout.”
It allowed Dakota State a chance to win the game, but Cameron Robinson’s shot banged off the backboard. Jamestown turned it over three times in overtime and the Trojans jumped out front. They would seal the game with free throws over the final 90 seconds.
Dylan Hale had 35 in the game to lead the Trojans. Mark Hoge lead UJ with 29.
Jamestown is the NSAA No. 1-seed and will host the winner of Presentation/Mayville on Saturday night at 6pm.
