CITY, N.D (NewsDakota.com) The Valley City Hi-Liners girl’s basketball team came up just short on Tuesday night, falling to #3 Fargo Shanley 58-45 at the Hi-Liner Activity Center.

The two point Eastern Dakota Conference loss drops Valley City to 9-7 in the conference and 12-5 overall. The Deacons advance to 14-2 on the season with a conference record of 13-2. The only losses that Shanley have suffered this year came at the hands of West Fargo.

Valley City came out strong using their defense to lead them to transition points and took the lead early in the game. About mid-way through the first, Shanley would take the lead back thanks in part to an 11 point half from Lauren Rotunda. The Deacons would enter the second half with a 5 point advantage.

In the second half, Valley City did a good job keeping the Deacons from scoring points in the paint. And with the help of Dierra Diegel, who finished the game with a team high 12 points, the Hi-Liners would take back the lead mid-way through the final period of play. However, the Deacons would find an answer, and its name was Sarah Jacobson. After scoring just five points in the first half, the Deacons sophomore guard would fight her way to the hoop for 14 second half points. She would push a comeback that would help Shanley take back the lead. Then with strong defense, the Deacons would close the lid on a Hi-Liners comeback.

Jacobson led all scores in the game with 19 points, teammates Alivia Fraase and Rotunda would each score 11 for the Deacons.

Aside from Diegel’s 12 points, two other Hi-Liners would finish with double digits. Madison Taylor and Jessica Denholm each had 11 points in the game.

The Hi-Liner girls will have the rest of the week off before hitting the road against Wahpeton on Tuesday, February 25th.

While the girls hosted the Fargo Shanley, the boys were on the road against the Deacons. They too would have tough night as Shanley cruised past the Hi-Liners for a 80-39 win.

The boy’s next game will be on Thursday when they host Fargo Davies. You can hear the call on 1490 KOVC starting at 7:30pm.
