Marion Sauby Ferguson, age 93, passed away on Friday, December 27, 2013, at Golden Acres Manor in Carrington, ND.
Elizabeth Marion was born on March 25, 1920, in Duluth, MN, to Sidney and Anna Mary (Bemel) Burdoin. She graduated from Proctor High School in Proctor, MN, in 1939, and then attended Duluth Teachers College.
During WWII, Marion lived in San Francisco, CA, and worked in China Town at a Chinese nursery school. On April 17, 1943, Marion was united in marriage to Orvin Sauby in San Francisco. He shipped out to the South Pacific the following day. When the war ended, they made their home in Minneapolis, MN, where Marion taught elementary school in Brooklyn Center, MN, while Orv attended U of M Dental School. They lived at Hancock, MN, for a time before moving in 1951, to Orvin’s home town, Elbow Lake, MN, where he practiced dentistry until his death in 1986.
Marion married Walter Weigand at his home on Pomme de Terre Lake in rural Ashby, MN, on July 23, 1987. Walter passed away on November 21, 1991.
Marion married Albert Ferguson on July 29, 1996 in Elbow Lake, MN. They lived at Fergus Falls, MN, for a time. Albert passed away on February 4, 2006.
On June 12, 2006, she moved to Carrington, ND, to be near her son’s family. While in Carrington, Marion initially lived at Poplar Court, and later at Holy Family Villa. She was residing at Golden Acres Manor at the time of her death.
Wherever she lived, Marion sought out people and made new friends. She enjoyed many things including walking, Bible Study, driving her car to the grocery store, having friends, writing letters, and having a hamburger and a beer at Bordulac, ND, until old age made these activities no longer possible.
Marion is survived by one daughter, Gretchen (D. Tom) Anderson, Ramsey, MN; one son, Fred (Kristy) Sauby, Carrington, ND; six grandchildren, James Pontius, Mitchell Sauby, Jessica (Corey) Hoffmann, Nicholas (Carisa) Sauby, Thomas (Jane) Sauby, and Marit Sauby; seven great-grandchildren, Morgan, Zayne, Harper, and Jersey Sauby, Weston and Kolter Sauby, and Phoenix Hoffmann; one brother, John (Dorothy) Burdoin, Dublin, CA.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Dr. Orvin Sauby, Walter Weigand, and Albert Ferguson; two sisters, Joan Foley and Gretchen Gartner; one brother-in-law, Patrick Foley; one son-in-law, Dr. Richard Alper; and cherished friends, Mary Pattison and Dorothea Isely.
The family would like to thank Dr. Richard Geier and all of the staff at Golden Acres who took care of Marion in her final years. We will remember our mother for her love and friendship.
