(NewsDakota.com)  The Carrington Cardinals boys basketball team kicked off their 2013 season with District 5 Barnes County North last night at the Carrington High School Gymnasium.  The Cards won 56-35 and are 1-0 on the young season, the Bison suffer their first loss and are 0-1.

At the end of the first quarter the score was tied at nine, but Senior Jake Edland and Junior Seth Abaurrea helped Carrington take a 22-18 at halftime.  Both teams showed their jitters in the early season, as they combined for 31 total turnovers in the first half.  Carrington struggled from the free throw line as well shooting only 37 percent in the first half, but ended the game at 54 percent.

Carrington had three players in double figures, leading all scorers was Edland with 24 points, followed by Sophomore Shae Mehring with 13 and Abarrea with 10.  Senior Ryan Indergaard fouled out with two points, Sophomore Connor Wendel added a spark off the bench with seven points. 

Barnes County North ended the game with a total of 34 turnovers and shot 66 percent from the charity stripe.  Nobody was in double figures for the Bison, but two players were close.  Senior Tj Steckler had nine points including a three-pointer in the third quarter and Senior William Gerntholz had nine points as well.

Carrington is in District 7 and Region 4 this year, but are making the move to District 5 and Region 3 next year.  This year District 5 consists of Barnes County North, Medina-Pingree-Buchanan, Lamoure-Litchville-Marion, Edgeley-Kulm-Montpelier and Ellendale.  While Carrington, Midkota-Kensal and Oakes will be newcomers to the district.  Medina/PB will move to District 6. 

Carrington JV beat Barnes County North JV 69-32, Freshman Bryce Edland had 18 points for the Carrington JV.
