(DSU Sports Information)- Dickinson State University is pleased to announce Pete Stanton as the new head football coach. Stanton is the 15thhead coach in Dickinson State football history.
“Pete is a proven leader, recruiter, and an outstanding individual,” Dickinson State Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Tim Daniel said. “As a coach he strives for success and fully supports his student-athletes in all their academic and athletic endeavors. He is a great fit to not only continue, but expand the tradition of success at Dickinson State.”
Stanton spent the past 14 years as an assistant coach, after being hired through an open and competitive search process, within the Blue Hawk football program. During those years, Dickinson State won seven conference championships and made seven trips to the NAIA National Playoffs. In 2003, the Blue Hawks won a school record 11 games and advanced to the quarterfinals of the NAIA National Playoffs.
Pete was also the head men’s and women’s track and field coach. Stanton helped guide the men’s track and field team to three consecutive NAIA National Outdoor Track and Field Championships from 2004-2006. He was named the NAIA National Outdoor Track and Field Coach of the Year for four straight years from 2003-2006.
Not only does Stanton have a rich history of coaching at Dickinson State, but he is also an alumni. Pete graduated in 1987 with a degree in social science and physical education. As an athlete, Stanton helped win two football conference championships and saw two NAIA National Playoff appearances. He was named a 1st Team NAIA All-American as a safety in 1987.
“It is a privilege and honor to be the next football coach at Dickinson State,” Stanton said. “Dickinson State is a very special place to me and my family. The pride, tradition, and loyalty that has been established in the football program is important to not only me, but to others as well. I have been fortunate enough to be involved in the program as a player or coach for 19 years. My goal for our players is for them to leave Dickinson State with a degree and a feeling of pride and accomplishment in their success at our school and in our football program.”
Stanton resides in Dickinson, N.D. with his wife Candace and their children, Luke and Maddy.
