(NewsDakota.com)- Jamestown clinched their first ever state volleyball championship in a dramatic finish. The Jays took down the defending state champion Bismarck Century Patriots 3-2 (22-25, 25-20, 22-25, 25-20, 15-12). Addie Eamon pounded out 24 kills for a new state title match record and saved her best for last.

“I couldn’t have done it without my setter and defense,” Eamon said deflecting credit after the match. She had three kills and a block down the stretch to help Jamestown pull away in the decisive fifth set.

Century had all the weapons in their arsenal and came out firing. Midway through the fourth set, it appeared the Patriots were taking control. Jamestown lead 15-10, but the Patriots scored the next five points to tie it at 15. The celebrated Jamestown back-row took their play to another level. McKayla Orr set a state tournament record with 94 digs and her 37 was a state title match record.

“How did we win that? I can’t even remember,” an exhausted Sara Hegerle said talking about the fourth set.

In that fourth set, Jenna Stilwell left just before the final point with a broken nose. The junior returned to the match and eventually had the go-ahead kill in set five.

Josie Hegerle was named Senior Athlete of the Year and she immediately said she would trade it for a state championship in a heartbeat. Fortunately, she won’t have to.

“That was a battle, you have to give them credit they were in it to win it,” Eamon said about the Patriots. “We believed in ourselves and what we were doing and the fact that we pulled through I couldn’t be happier..”

Julina Niemeier, along with the three seniors, was named to the all-tournament team.
