CITY, N.D (NewsDakota.com) Fargo South avenged a regular-season loss to Valley City in the opening round of the East Region volleyball tournament. The fifth-seeded Bruins defeated the fourth-seeded Hi-Liners three sets to one (15-25, 25-14, 25-19, 25-14) at the Hi-Liner Activity Center.
In set one, Valley City scored the final 11 points to win 25-15. Jessica Denholm had five ace serves in the rally. Denholm reached a career milestone later in the match when she reached 1000 assists.
The Bruins, led by sophomore Emily Stroup, led the way in set two en route to a 25-14 win.
Set 3 saw eight ties before South scored seven of the final nine points to win 25-19. The Bruins ran off six consecutive points to lead 10-5 in set 4 before finishing the match 25-14.
Stroup led the Bruins with 22 kills. Maddie McConn added ten kills. Claire Olson led the Hi-Liners with eleven kills, and Dierra Diegel added ten kills.
Valley City will face Wahpeton in a loser-out match on Friday. Game time is 2:00 at the Hi-Liner Activity Center. South meets top-seeded Shanley at 6:00 in the semifinals.
