Merwyn John, age 89, died Friday, November 1, 2013 at Eventide at Hi-Acres Manor in Jamestown, ND. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:30 AM on Saturday, November 16th at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church in Valley City. Visitation will be held on Friday from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM at the Lerud-Schuldt Funeral Home and one hour before the service at the church on Saturday morning. A prayer service will be held at 7:00 PM Friday evening at the church. Inurnment will be in St. Catherine’s Catholic Cemetery.
Merwyn Sidney John was born the son of Robert Sidney and Fern Marie (Olson) John January 28, 1924. He graduated from high school in Burt, IA. He enlisted in the US Army and served during WWII earning the rank of Corporal. On April 19, 1947 Merwyn married Emelene (Emmy) Alig in Whittemore, IA. Merwyn and Emmy moved to Mandan, ND where he ranched and bought and sold livestock with his father. Merwyn and Emmy moved to Valley City, ND in 1960 where they owned and operated John’s Livestock Auction with Merwyn’s brother Richard. Merwyn and Emmy bought John’s Auction Service in Valley City and owned and operated the business for many years in addition to selling insurance for Nodak Mutual Insurance company. Emmy died February 10, 1994. Merwyn married Verletta Gordon on Feburary 20, 1995. Merwyn and Verletta continued the Auction Service until Merwyn retired. Merwyn and Verletta enjoyed their grandchildren, great-grandchildren, dancing and socializing. He was a member of the Valley City Amvets, American Legion, and the Eagles.
He is survided by his wife Verletta, sister Shirley (Bill) Norton, Lawrenceville, GA, sister-in-law Kathy John, Fergus Falls, MN, daughter Donna (Bob) Stringer, Sykeston, ND, sons Robert (Debbie), Appleton, WI, William, Mesa, AZ, Kenneth (Joan), Horace, ND, daughter-in-law Janelle John, West Fargo, ND, step-sons Jim (Bonnie) Gordon, Valley City, ND, Ken (Doreen) Gordon, Jamestown, ND, step-daughters Debbie (Paul) Kleven, Larimore, ND, DeeAnn (David) Johnson, Champlin, MN, Linda (Rodney) Latt, Litchville, ND, Melanie (Mark) Ferguson, Monticello, MN, Cammy (Brian) Busta, Glyndon, MN, Genise (David) Solseng, Ada, MN, 31 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Sidney and Fern John, brothers, Robert, Donald, and Richard, sister Sharon, and his son Bruce.
