CITY, N.D (NewsDakota.com) Over the Weekend, the Vikings women’s basketball team opened the season with two worthy opponents, Dordt College and #7 Northwestern College. Despite two well fought games, the Vikings would drop to 0-2 to start the season.

First on the docket was Dordt College. The Vikings would strike first, and held a 37-35 lead going into halftime. However, the advantage would not last as the Defenders would rally in the second half going on a 9-0 run in the first few minutes. The Vikings were able to take the lead back, but would lose it for a final time late in the game. When the final whistle blew, it was Dordt who claimed the win 68-62.

Leading Valley City on the score board was Kelsey Hunter who finished the night with 14 points. Sierra Even was close behind adding 12 points to the Vikings side of the scoreboard.

The women would return to action once again on Saturday hosting Northwestern College. It was another close match up going into the break as the Vikings trailed by just 9 points going into the second half of play. However, after halftime, the Red Raiders would surge past the Vikings outscoring the home team by 20 points. When the clock showed zero the Vikings fell to 0-2 on the season as the Raiders claimed an 83-54 victory.

The Vikings were led by pre-season all conference forward, Brittney Lehner who finished the night with 16 points and 8 rebounds. The leading scorer for the Northwestern was Alli Engebretson who finished with 22 points.

The women return to the court next weekend in Concordia, Nebraska. The Vikings will take on Doane on Friday and Concordia on Saturday.
