Djavair Sergeyevna Avakimova, 88, passed away on Saturday, October 19, 2013 at the Sheyenne Care Center in Valley City, ND. She was born on December 21, 1924 in Yaroslavl, Russia.
Djavair grew up in Baku, Azerbaijan. She completed her high school studies ahead of time and enrolled in medical college in Baku. She received a Medical Assistant degree shortly after the beginning of World War II, and immediately started working in city hospitals treating wounded soldiers and assisting at surgeries.
After the war, Djavair enrolled in economics school at the Azerbaijan University in Baku and received an economics degree. She began her career as an economist at the Azerbaijan Department of Irrigation and Agriculture. Djavair rose to the Chief Economist position at the Department and held that position until her voluntary retirement in 1980. Djavair retired to enjoy and take care of her new grandchildren.
Djavair married Nikita Avakovich Saiynats in 1947 in Baku. They had two children and were happily married for 49 years.
Djavair immigrated to the United States in 1994 and joined her daughter and two grandchildren. She attended Faith Lutheran Church and had many hobbies. She enjoyed literature, music, ballet, art, television, and travel. While living in America, she has received several medals as a WWII veteran for her hard work and commitment to victory through the Russian Consulate in Seattle, WA.
Djavair is survived by her daughter Violetta in Valley City, ND; her son Sergey (Larisa) in Moscow, Russia; her brother Sergey in Seattle, WA; five grandchildren, Natalya, Gaiana, Irina, Greg, and Sergey Jr.; three great-grandchildren Alexander, Yelena, and Victoria; her niece Anoush (Konstantin) and nephew Sergey A. Jr. (Tatyana), and numerous other relatives.
Djavair is preceded in death by her infant sister, her parents, and her husband.
A memorial service will be held at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church at 138 3rd St NW, Valley City, ND, on October 25, at 2pm. A visitation will be held at the Oliver-Nathan Funeral Chapel at 251 Central Ave S, Valley City, ND, on October 24, between 4pm and 7pm.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to the Faith Lutheran Church of Valley City, ND, to assist with the rebuilding and the renovation of the church in the event of the recent fire.
