(NewsDakota.com)- It only took 28 seconds to turn the tide in the WDA finale for the Jamestown Blue Jays as they knocked off Dickinson 17-13. In those 28 seconds it went from a 10-3 Midget lead to a 17-10 Jay lead.
It started with a slant pass that Joey Gebhardt hauled in from QB Ross Monson and raced 33-yards to the end zone. Just one snap later, Dickinson QB Andrew Heckaman fumbled an exchange with Jace Dukart. Ethan Gumke delivered the hit and the ball squirted free.
Caleb Ellingson scooped it up and rumbled 30-yard for the go-ahead score.
The Jays would hold up that score into the half and it was the last time they scored. The defense for Jamestown was smothering, despite some great field position for the Midgets, four drives that started inside the Jays 25, they yielded just the 13 points.
Dickinson added a field goal to get with four, but that ended up being the final margin.
Ten of Dickinson’s 13 points came directly off a pair of Monson interceptions. It was just the second and third interception Monson has thrown all year.
The Midgets had a hard time holding onto the football with two interceptions and four fumbles. Both picks were taken away by Gumke.
A season ago, the Dickinson offensive line manhandled the Jays upfront. This season, despite all five Midger starters back, the Jays defensive front returned the favor.
Jamestown is headed back to the playoffs for the first time since 2008. They will be WDA No. 4 seed and will battle the EDC No. 1 seed on November 1st.
The season finale is Friday against Fargo North at Ernie Gates Field.
