S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) received all five first-place votes and tallied 25 points and is the preseason coaches’ selection to win the inaugural North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) Men’s Basketball Championship for 2013-14. The Trojans posted a school-record 25 victories last year (25-9 overall record) and advanced to the NAIA
Division II Men’s basketball Quarterfinals in Point Lookout, Mo. DSU won their second consecutive Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) Conference Postseason Tournament in Jamestown, N.D. last season.
Jamestown (N.D.), 2013 NAIA Division II Men’s Basketball national tournament qualifier, totaled 19 points to finish second in the coaches’ preseason poll. Mayville State (N.D.) earned 14 points for a third-place in the preseason poll. Valley City State (N.D.), who advanced to NAIA Division II Men’s Basketball National Tournament last season, finished fourth in the poll. The Vikings received 11 points. Presentation (S.D.) is picked to finish fifth.
The preseason poll was voted by the league coaches.
Jamestown and Mayville State kick off their 2013-14 basketball season Friday and Saturday. The Jimmies and Comets will play in the Mayville State Classic. Dakota State is slated to open their season at home on Wednesday, Oct. 30 against in-state rival Mount Marty.
Presentation and Valley City State begin their season on Friday, Nov. 1 at home. The Saints play a pair of home games versus Crossroads College on Nov. 1 and 2. The Vikings welcome Dordt (Iowa) on Nov. 1 in Valley City, N.D.
