CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) It was a sold finish to the Weekend for the Valley City High School athletics.
It all started Friday night when the Hi-Liners football team upset the 5th ranked Lisbon Broncos 14-12 in the Sandbag Bowl. It was the second straight year that Valley City earned the honor of taking home the Volunteer Trophy. The win moves the Hi-Liners (2-3 in East Region play and 3-4 overall) into a four way tie for the final playoff spot in the region. The teams in the race with Valley City are Grafton, Kindred, and Central Cass.
Over the weekend, the Hi-Liner Volleyball team was also in action at the Fargo Invitational. In the 24-team tournament, Valley City finished with a solid .500 record earning two wins against Dickinson High and one against TMCHS, Belcourt. Their losses came to Fargo North in the opening round of play, Bismarck Century, and Lincoln High school of Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
The cross country team took part in the action as well, taking on the entire Eastern Dakota Conference at the league meet on Saturday. The race was held at Grand Forks Lincoln Drive Park and the day featured some rain and wind, making the course muddy. Thriving in the conditions, Valley City’s Mikaylah Ross finished in 18th place earning All-EDC honors. On the boy’s course, Casey Engelhard was the top finisher for the Hi-Liners at a time of 18 minutes and one second. With a strong kick, Eangelhard ended the race in 21st missing the All-EDC spot by just one place. The Boys team finished in 10th while the girls ended the meet in the eighth spot.
