N.D. (AP) – North Dakota’s Game and Fish Department is cautioning motorists to be on the lookout for deer as they drive.

Wildlife officials say this is the time of year when young deer are dispersing from their home ranges. October through early December is the peak period for deer-vehicle accidents.

Motorists are advised to slow down and be cautious after dark. Most deer-vehicle crashes happen around dawn and dusk, when deer are most often moving around.

A law passed by the Legislature earlier this year eliminates the need for a driver involved in an accident with a deer to notify law enforcement authorities if only the vehicle is damaged. Deer-vehicle accidents that involve injury or other property damage still must be reported.
