CITY, N.D (NewsDakota.com) On week seven of the high school football season,  the Valley City Hi-Liners made the trip to Lisbon for the 2013 edition of the Sandbag Bowl. Once again the Volunteer Trophy would be on the line between the two rivals. After winning the game last year, the Hi-Liners were responsible for bringing the trophy with them to this year’s contest. When the fourth quarter ended, it was Valley City who earned the responsibility of taking the trophy back on the bus with a 14-12 win over the Broncos.

When the game started it looked as if both teams would find their way into the end zone at will. The Broncos were the first to score when quarterback, Dylan Urbach, manufactured an outstanding 38 yard run on the opening drive. However, the two point conversion would be stifled by the Hi-Liners defense who held Jenner Manske out of the end zone.

It wouldn’t take long for the home team to take a 12-0 lead. On the next drive, Urbach found Jason Anderson streaking down the far sideline on a 62 yard touchdown pass. The Hi-Liners would then hold off the Broncos second two point conversion attempt.

Down by 12 the Hi-Liners offense came alive. Valley City earned their first touchdown on what appeared to be a broken play. With John Halgrimson running to the left, it looked as if quarterback Jared Lentz was handing the ball to his right, when no one took the ball, the junior play caller just kept going. On the two point conversion Lindgren would pull the Hi-Liners to within four points of the Broncos.  It would be Lindgren who gave the Hi-Liners the lead running the ball in from just two yards out to start the second quarter. A missed two point conversation would keep the game tight.

With solid play from the defense, the Hi-Liners would take the two point win, and with it there second Sandbag Bowl in a row.

Valley City returns home next weekend, when they host Fargo Shanley on Saturday, October 19th at five o’clock. Tune in to 1490 KOVC for all the action.
