N.D. (AP) – A group of parents who want to mandate that North Dakota schools start classes after Labor Day can begin collecting signatures to try to bring their proposal to a public vote next year. Secretary of State Al Jaeger approved the petition for circulation on Friday.

The group hopes to put an initiated measure on the November 2014 ballot. Proponents will need to collect 13,452 signatures to force a vote.

Each school district is currently free to set its own calendar, including the starting date for the academic year.
