CITY (NewsDakota.com)–The Lisbon Broncos and Valley City Hi-Liners meet each other on the football field in the third annual “Sandbag Bowl” tonight at Sandager Park in Lisbon.
The game became known as the Sandbag Bowl after the epic flooding in the spring of 2009, when players from both football teams were called upon to battle the Sheyenne River by sandbagging.
The teams play for a travelling trophy known as the “Volunteer Trophy”, a trophy that remembers all volunteers in the flood fight. Lisbon has held the trophy each of the past two years.
The Hi-Liners enter the game 2-3, but 0-3 in Region I (eastern division) play after seeing their starting offense shut out in three straight games. Outside of a touchdown scored in the final minutes of their game with Wahpeton, a score by the junior varsity, Valley City has not scored in three games.
The Broncos had a rough start to their regional play as well, dropping games to Grafton and Kindred after a 2-0 run through non-conference play. They earned their first regional win with a 35-19 victory over Griggs-Barnes County last week, a team that beat Valley City 6-0 two weeks ago.
Pregame coverage begins at 6:15 p.m., with kickoff at 7:00 p.m., on both Q101 and KOVC AM tonight.
