CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) A strong first half led the Dickinson Midgets to a 48-0 win over Valley City in the Hi-Liners season opener.

The Hi-Liners entered the game with a young team, dressing seven sophomores. On the other side of the ball there were none.   Dickinson returned 17 players from last year’s 3-7 squads and their knowledge of the varsity game gave the midgets the upper hand on Friday night.

Dickinson was led by Junior quarterback Andrew Heckeman who got the job done both in the air and on the ground. The Midgets quarterback lead the team to a touch down on the first drive finding Jud Mork on a 30 yard pass. It wouldn’t be his last of the day, two more times he found Dylan Skabo on deep passes for scores. The Midgets final offensive touchdown in the first half came on the legs of Heckeman, who scampered into the end zone from the 30 yard line.

At the end of the first half the Hi-Liners offense had their strongest play of the day when Dustin Lindgren ran for 80 yards before being hauled down by the Dickinson secondary at the five yard line. However, The drive would come up short. On fourth down, Hi-Liners quarterback, Jared Lentz, was stripped from behind by Mitch Mehrer, the ball was quickly scoped up and returned the length of the field by Midget’s linebacker, Blake Vance.

The seond half saw a number of new players enter the field for both teams. The lone touchdown of the half came from Dickinson’s Michael McChesney.

After the loss, head coach Scott Roehrich pointed to the game as something the team must learn from.  The Hi-Liners will head to Dickinson next week when they take on Dickinson Trinity. You can hear the game live on KOVC.
