Rachel Mary Zink, 91 of Carrington, ND passed away peacefully at her home Saturday, August 17, 2013.

Rachel Gaffney was born May 25, 1922, to John and Josephine (Plinksi) Gaffney in Stutsman County, ND. She grew up with four siblings on her parent’s farm, east of Melville, ND, and graduated from high school in Aliquippa, Pennsylvania in 1941. WWII took her to Seattle, WA, where she worked as a “Rosie the Riveter”. She returned to ND, and later married Emmet Eugene Zink on Oct 9, 1947, at Lake Park, MN. They raised eight children together on the farm near Bordulac, moving into Carrington in 1968.

Rachel’s greatest joy was her family. She loved spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed gardening and had many beautiful flowers often on display throughout her home. The coffee pot was on and there was always something good to eat – especially her caramel rolls loved by her grandchildren.

Rachel is survived by her four sons, Cletus (Linda) Zink, Missoula, MT, Tim (Mary) Zink, James Zink, and Paul (Rosanne) Zink, all of Carrington; her three daughters, Rosemary Zink of Hawaii, Teresa (Marc) Svartoien, Freeman, SD and Susan (Dave) Stickney, Oshkosh, WI; her grandchildren: Nicole Ogren, Natalie Green, Jasmine Laine, Ginger Sillars, John Zink, Michael Zink, Abby Gudmestad, Nicholas Zink, Brittney Kainz, Rachel Olson, Melissa Fischer, Lucas Svartoien, Wyatt Stickney and Ellie Stickney; and seven great-grandchildren plus one on the way.

She is preceded in death by her husband Eugene, Jan 3, 1989, her eldest son Mark, July 27, 2006, and her siblings Donald Gaffney, John “Jack” Gaffney, Mary Gaffney, and Leo Gaffney.

Her Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, August 20, 2013, at 10:30AM at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Carrington.

Visitation will be held Monday 11AM – 6PM, in Evans Funeral Home, Carrington, with a Prayer Service held Monday 7PM at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
