S.D. (AP) – The president of the Northern Beef Packers plant in Aberdeen says he is still working for the company.
KSFY-TV in Sioux Falls reports that Palmer said Thursday morning he had resigned, but later said he is still employed with the company. The station says Palmer would not say why he made the earlier comment.
Contacted at the beef plant Thursday afternoon, Palmer told The Associated Press he has no comment on the issue. The struggling company has laid off nearly all of its employees and filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
The beef plant is owned by Korean investors. Part-owner Oshik Song says he is going to South Korea shortly for an investors meeting.
Laid-off workers at the Northern Beef Packers plant in the northern South Dakota city of Aberdeen say they haven’t been paid for more than two weeks and the plant hasn’t slaughtered any cattle for more than three weeks.
More than 250 workers were laid off Wednesday, following the layoffs of another 108 workers three months ago. That leaves only six workers to watch over the idled $115 million plant as it goes through Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
The American News reports that U.S. Bankruptcy Court documents show the plant owned by Korean investors owes millions of dollars to nearly 300 creditors.
