(NewsDakota.com)- No, that is not a misprint. The Jamestown College men’s basketball team will travel to Albuquerque, New Mexico in November to battle one of the top Division I programs in the country. The Lobos are coming a season in which they were ranked in the Top-25 throughout the season before a second-round exit in the NCAA Tournament to Harvard.
The game will be played on November 6th at 8pm CT. It will be the fifth game of the season for the Jimmies, who open their season on October 18th.
“We are very excited to add this game against New Mexico to our schedule,” said Head Coach Justin Wieck. “It will be a great experience to play in an arena that ranks among the best in the country against a team that will be ranked in the Top-15 or 20 with multiple NBA prospects.”
The Pit hosted the 1983 NCAA Division I Men’s Final Four, which was won by North Carolina State and Jim Valvano. One of the iconic images of that title game was Valvano running around the floor looking for someone to hug after Lorenzo Charles dunked in the game winning basket.
When Steve Alford left to take the UCLA job, Craig Neal was promoted to head coach. Neal was an assistant at Iowa under Alford when Wieck played there and was a grad assistant.
It will be a tough week for the Jimmies who will play their first home games of the season the week before against sure-to-be ranked Northwestern College and Dordt College. Then immediately following the game in Albuquerque they will head to Concordia College in Nebraska for a pair of games against Oklahoma Wesleyan and Culver-Stockton College.
