CITY (NewsDakota.com) – The Hi-Liner girls tennis team won its second straight match Friday, defeating Fargo South 6-3 in Valley City.
The Hi-Liners had more depth than Fargo South, winning the No. 3 through No. 6 singles matches and No. 2 and No. 3 doubles.
Valley City’s top singles player Clarissa Olson put up a fight at No. 1 singles for Valley City, but eventually lost to the defending state champion Karen Moe by a score of 6-3, 6-4.
Valley City’s singles wins came from Sara Gilbertson, Destiny Winkler, Maia Wendel and Reagan Ingstad. Sam Coit and Sara Gilbertson teamed up for a win at No. 2 doubles and Maia Wendel and Reagan Ingstad won at No. 3 doubles. Ingstad accomplished the rare feat of winning both her singles and doubles matches by scores of 6-0, 6-0.
Valley City improves to 2-3 in EDC play and is currently fifth in the standings. They’ll have a chance to make some more noise this week with three matches and a tournament on the schedule.
“These last two matches have put us right in the mix in the EDC,” said head coach Matt Nielson. “The matches next week all around the EDC will be crazy, and we should know our seed for the regional tournament by the end of the day on Friday.”
The Hi-Liners begin their week with a home match Tuesday against Fargo North. First serve is set for 4:30 p.m. Valley City also has a pair of road matches at Fargo Shanley and Wahpeton.
