N.D. (AP) – The Griggs County Commission has decided to build a new courthouse, despite voters rejecting the idea three times in a span of 14 months.

Commissioners say they don’t need voter approval if they can build a new courthouse without raising taxes. They hope to begin construction of the $3 million building in a matter of months.

Commissioner Keith Monson says the courthouse is 130 years old and the oldest active courthouse in North Dakota. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Some county residents say their voices aren’t being heard. John Wakefield says elected officials have trampled on election results.
